Gemini chat history missing: why it happens and how to find it

Missing Gemini chat history is usually caused by a setting or by the wrong Google account. Check the account first, since each account has its own chats. Then open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini: Keep activity must be on, and auto-delete removes activity older than 18 months by default. A chat you added to a notebook leaves the main list. Temporary chats are never saved.

Check which Google account you are in
Click the profile picture at the top right and read the email. People with two Google accounts often open Gemini under the wrong one, and each account has separate chats. Switch accounts and look again.

Search for the chat
Click the magnifier next to the Gemini logo at the top of the sidebar to open Search chats, and type a word you remember. Search reads the replies as well as the titles, shows a snippet, and can sort by Most relevant or Most recent. The chat may still exist, far down the list.

Open your notebooks
A chat you add to a notebook moves out of the main list. It shows under Past chats on the notebook page instead. Open each notebook under Notebooks in the sidebar and look there. If someone deleted a notebook, the chats inside it were deleted with it.

Make sure Keep activity is on
Open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. Keep activity must read On for chats to build a history. With it off, Google still holds chats for 72 hours and then they are gone.

Look at the auto-delete window
On the same page, find the auto-delete row. With the default setting it reads Deleting activity older than 18 months. The options are 3, 18, or 36 months, or Don't auto-delete. If it was set to 3 months, older chats are already gone. A longer period protects future chats.

Rule out temporary and deleted chats
Temporary chats never appear in your history. Also check whether you, or someone with access to the account, deleted the chat or cleared activity by date. Deleted activity is not listed in My Activity.

- Google offers no undo once a deletion is confirmed. If you made a Google Takeout archive earlier, it may still hold the chat.
