Does Gemini have folders for chats?

No. The Gemini app has no folders for chats. Three features cover part of the job: pinned chats stay at the top of your list, notebooks group chats and sources in one flat list, and Search chats finds old chats by keyword. Adding a chat to a notebook moves it out of the main list. Notebooks cannot nest, and deleting a notebook also deletes the chats inside it.

Pin the chats you return to
Hover a chat in the left panel, click the More menu (three dots), and choose Pin. The chat moves to the top of the list and shows a pin icon. Choose Unpin from the same menu to release it.

Rename chats so you can find them
Gemini names chats automatically and the names are often vague. Choose Rename from the same menu and put a short tag first, such as Acme: pricing draft. A tag makes a chat easy to spot and easy to find in search.

Group chats in a notebook
Open Notebooks in the sidebar and click New notebook. If an intro screen appears, click Get started. Type a name in the Project or idea field and press Enter. To add an existing chat, hover it, click the three dots, and choose Add to notebook. This item shows only after you have a notebook. Pick the notebook in the Move Chat box. The chat leaves your main list and appears under Past chats in the notebook.

Find chats with Search chats
Click the magnifier next to the Gemini logo at the top of the sidebar, type a keyword, even one from a reply, and open the match.

- Can I put one notebook inside another?
- No. Notebooks form a flat list. A notebook menu offers only Pin, Rename, and Delete (plus Notebook settings inside it), and the Add to notebook choice exists for chats only, so there is no nesting.
- What happens to my chats if I delete a notebook?
- They are deleted too. The confirm box reads "Delete notebook everywhere?" and says the notebook, including all sources and chats, is permanently deleted from both Gemini and NotebookLM. It suggests moving chats out first, so do that for any you want to keep.
- Why do I not see Notebooks in my Gemini sidebar?
- The rollout is gradual, and in the European Economic Area you may need to connect it manually. Work and school accounts can differ too.
- Can one chat sit in two notebooks?
- No. Adding a chat moves it out of your main list into that notebook. Inside a notebook the chat menu says Move to notebook and Remove from notebook, so a chat lives in one notebook at a time.
