Folders, subfolders, and color labels layered into the ChatGPT sidebar.

Quick answer

ChatGPT does not have native folders. The sidebar is a flat, recency-ordered list, so important threads scroll out of view as new chats appear. GPT Master adds a folder layer to chatgpt.com: nested folders and subfolders, nine preset colors plus a custom color picker, drag and drop reordering, and bulk move into folders. Folder structure is stored locally in the browser, not on an external server, and conversations move into folders one at a time or in batches.

How people organize ChatGPT chats today

Most heavy ChatGPT users have a workaround for the missing folder system. Each one trades something away.

What this looks like in practice

Example: using folders to keep three active client engagements separate

A consultant working three active engagements used to scroll the ChatGPT sidebar trying to remember which strategy thread belonged to which client. After two weeks the recency list was a wall of similar-looking titles. With GPT Master folders, each client got a top-level folder with subfolders for proposals, research, and meeting prep. Color labels made the currently active engagement stand out at a glance. When a client circled back two months later, the right conversation was three clicks away instead of buried under fifty unrelated chats from intervening work.

Frequently asked

Questions people have before they install

These questions cover fit, workflow, and what to expect before installing GPT Master, so people can understand the feature in practical terms before clicking through to the Chrome Web Store.

How do folders work?

Create a folder in the GPT Master sidebar and give it a name plus an optional color label. Drag a conversation into the folder, or open Bulk Actions to move many conversations at once. Folders can be nested into subfolders.

Where does the folder structure live?

Stored locally in your browser's extension storage. Folder data is not uploaded to a server, and it does not sync to other computers.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus for this to work?

No. GPT Master folders work with every ChatGPT tier: Free, Plus, Team, Pro, and Enterprise. The extension layers on top of chatgpt.com regardless of your subscription level.

Does this conflict with ChatGPT Projects?

No. Projects scopes files and custom instructions to one initiative. GPT Master folders organize the broader conversation history across initiatives. You can keep a Project for a specific brief and still file the conversation into a client-level folder.

What happens if I uninstall the extension?

Chrome clears extension storage on uninstall, so the folder structure is removed locally. ChatGPT conversations themselves are untouched, since they live in your ChatGPT account, not in the extension.

Which browsers does this work in?

Chrome and Chromium-based browsers: Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera.

Can I rearrange or rename folders later?

Yes. Folders can be renamed, recolored, nested, and reordered by drag and drop in the sidebar. Conversations can be moved between folders one at a time or in batches via Bulk Actions.
