Quick answer

ChatGPT Conversation Notes let you annotate messages and highlight key passages in the chat. Highlight text in any reply to attach a note directly to it; the text stays marked on every reload. All annotations are indexed in the right panel under Current Chat or All Notes, making context easy to retrieve.

How it works

How conversation notes change a thread you plan to reopen

Notes are most useful on threads you expect to revisit: decisions, research, recurring planning chats. The passage highlight is what makes the note re-anchor to the right line later.

  1. 1

Open the GPT Master right panel and switch to the Notes tab in any ChatGPT conversation.

  2. 2

Select a passage in a message and attach a note to it, or add a conversation-level note without selecting text.

  3. 3

When you reopen the thread later, GPT Master finds the first occurrence of the noted passage in that message and marks it in place; the note is one click away in the Notes tab.

What this looks like in practice

Example: using notes to keep a quarterly planning thread accountable

A product manager runs one long ChatGPT thread per quarter as the rolling planning doc. Across 200 messages it accumulates scope debates, decisions, deferred items, and follow-ups. Without notes, all of that lives in the conversation as undifferentiated text. With GPT Master notes, the PM highlights each decision and attaches a one-line note ("Approved 2026-04-12, owner: Lin"). When the quarterly retro opens the thread two months later, the highlighted decisions stand out in the conversation, and the Notes tab lists them as a clean inventory. The unstructured thread reads like a structured doc, without ever leaving ChatGPT.

Frequently asked

Questions people have before they install

These questions cover fit, workflow, and what to expect before installing GPT Master, so people can understand the feature in practical terms before clicking through to the Chrome Web Store.

How do conversation notes work?

Open the Notes tab in the GPT Master right panel inside any ChatGPT conversation. Select a passage in a message to attach a note to that passage, or add a conversation-level note without selecting text. The highlighted passage is re-anchored automatically when you reload the conversation.

What does "passage highlighting" mean exactly?

When you attach a note to selected text, GPT Master remembers the text and finds its first occurrence in that message on every reload, highlighting it in place. If the same phrase appears more than once in the message, only the first occurrence is highlighted.

Where do my notes live?

Stored locally in your browser's extension storage. Notes are not uploaded to a server, and they do not sync to other computers.

Do notes change my ChatGPT conversation?

No. Notes are stored against the conversation id and the message id inside the extension. Nothing is written back to ChatGPT, and the model never sees the note text.

Are conversation notes free?

Yes, the free tier covers basic note-taking. Optional Pro upgrades are available (see [pricing](/#pricing)).

Ready to try it inside ChatGPT?

Annotate the line, not just the thread.
