How to export a Gemini chat (and what each route gives you)

To export one Gemini chat, open it, click the three dots at the top right, and choose Download PDF or Export to Docs. Both cover the whole conversation. For a single reply, use the three dots under that reply to export it to Docs or draft it in Gmail. To get every chat at once, request a Google Takeout archive, which you can download as HTML or JSON.
The right route depends on what you need. A whole chat as a PDF or a Doc takes two clicks. One reply goes to Docs or Gmail from its own menu. Gemini can also turn one answer into a file if you ask. A backup of every chat comes from Takeout, which can take hours or days and covers all of your Gemini activity. This page covers the Gemini app only, not Gemini in Workspace apps or the API.

One chat: Download PDF or Export to Docs
Open the chat, click the three dots at the top right, and choose Download PDF or Export to Docs. Download PDF opens your browser print window with Save as PDF selected, so click Save. Export to Docs makes an editable Google Doc named after the chat in Drive, with every prompt and reply in order. Files Gemini built in the chat are not included.

One reply: Docs or Gmail
Under a Gemini response, click the three dots and choose Export to Docs or Draft in Gmail. This moves that one response, not the whole conversation.

One answer as a file: ask Gemini
Type a request such as "Make me a downloadable PDF of the answer". Gemini builds the file in a panel next to the chat. Click Export, then choose PDF (or .md for Markdown) to download it, or Drive to save it there. Ask once for each answer you want.

Everything: Google Takeout
Go to takeout.google.com and click Deselect all. Select My Activity, click All activity data included, and select only Gemini Apps. Click Multiple formats and choose HTML or JSON. Click Next step, pick a delivery method, and click Create export. Google emails a link that stays valid for 7 days.

Find your chat in the archive
Unzip the download. The HTML file opens in a browser, and the JSON file suits scripts. My Activity saves each prompt as its own entry, so search the archive for a word from the chat you want.

- Does Gemini have an export button for a full conversation?
- Yes, in the chat menu: Download PDF and Export to Docs. Both cover the whole conversation, not just the last reply. There is no Markdown or HTML item there, and Takeout is the route for every chat at once.
- Does exporting remove my chats from Gemini?
- No. Takeout makes a copy and downloading it does not delete anything from Google. Deleting is a separate step in Gemini Apps Activity.
- Should I pick HTML or JSON in Takeout?
- Pick HTML to read the archive in a browser. Pick JSON if you plan to search or process it with a script.
- Can I get a chat as a Markdown file?
- Only as a file that Gemini writes for you. Ask Gemini to write the answer as a .md file, then click Export and choose .md. There is no Markdown item in the chat menu or the reply menu.
