ChatGPT Minimap: Skim and jump inside long threads

GPT Master adds a right-panel minimap to ChatGPT. Switch scope between prompts-only and all turns, cycle heading depth across four levels (prompts view, H1, H1+H2, H1+H2+H3), click any entry to jump there, and stay oriented in conversations of any length.

Quick answer

The ChatGPT minimap provides an interactive outline of your active conversation in the right panel. It displays user prompts and assistant headings as clickable shortcuts, allowing you to jump to any message instantly. Features include four depth levels, prompts-only or full-turn views, and automatic scroll tracking to keep you oriented.

How people navigate long ChatGPT threads today

Most heavy ChatGPT users invent a strategy for long threads. Each one breaks differently.

  • Scroll the conversation

    • Thread Overview
    • One-Click Navigation
    • Adjustable Zoom
    • Stays in ChatGPT

Tradeoff · Linear in thread length. Easy to overshoot the target message.

  • Use Ctrl+F to search for a phrase

    • Thread Overview
    • One-Click Navigation
    • Adjustable Zoom
    • Stays in ChatGPT

Tradeoff · Only works if you remember the exact wording. Misses paraphrased content.

  • Break the conversation into smaller chats

    • Thread Overview
    • One-Click Navigation
    • Adjustable Zoom
    • Stays in ChatGPT

Tradeoff · Loses the running context that made the thread worth continuing.

  • Use ChatGPT's built-in conversation search

    • Thread Overview
    • One-Click Navigation
    • Adjustable Zoom
    • Stays in ChatGPT

Tradeoff · Finds matching threads across your history, not a structural overview of the one you are in.

  • Star a few messages with bookmarks

    • Thread Overview
    • One-Click Navigation
    • Adjustable Zoom
    • Stays in ChatGPT

Tradeoff · Useful for known anchors. Does not help when you need to see the whole structure.

  • GPT Master minimap

Tradeoff · Relies on the assistant adding headings for the deeper depth levels to be useful. The prompts-only scope works on every thread.

What this looks like in practice

Example: using the minimap to navigate a 300-message planning thread

A product manager has been pushing a single planning conversation with ChatGPT past 300 messages: scope debates, spec drafts, edge cases, decisions, follow-ups. Reopening it to settle a question means scrolling for a minute before recognizing the right section. With the minimap open in prompts-only scope, the entire thread shows as a vertical list of every user prompt sent. The PM clicks the prompt that started the rate-limit discussion, the page jumps directly to that exchange, and the answer is right there. The same thread that used to feel like an unmanageable wall reads like a table of contents.

Frequently asked

Questions people have before they install

These questions cover fit, workflow, and what to expect before installing GPT Master, so people can understand the feature in practical terms before clicking through to the Chrome Web Store.

How does the minimap work?

GPT Master scans the open ChatGPT conversation and builds a list of every user prompt and every assistant heading. The list renders in the right panel with two scope tabs (prompts only, all turns), a depth cycle (H1, H1+H2, H1+H2+H3, prompts view), and filter chips for code blocks and starred messages. Clicking an entry scrolls the page to that message.

Does the minimap follow my scroll position?

There is an auto-follow toggle in the minimap toolbar. With it on, the active entry highlights as you scroll. With it off, the minimap stays where you left it so you can use it as a static map.

Does the minimap send my conversation anywhere?

No. The minimap reads the conversation directly from the ChatGPT page in your browser. Nothing about the messages is sent to a GPT Master server to render the overview.

Does the minimap slow down long ChatGPT threads?

No. GPT Master indexes the conversation once when you open the minimap and updates incrementally as new messages arrive. The overview stays responsive on threads with several hundred messages, and the rest of ChatGPT runs as normal.

Does the minimap work in ChatGPT Projects and Custom GPTs?

Yes. The minimap renders anywhere ChatGPT loads a conversation: standard chats, Projects, and Custom GPTs. The same scope, depth, and filter controls apply on every surface.

Is the minimap free?

Yes, the free tier covers basic minimap usage. Optional Pro upgrades are available (see [pricing](/#pricing)).
