How to spot-check a ChatGPT answer
Updated May 28, 2026
Quick answer
Spot-checking a ChatGPT answer is the gut-feel pass: does this match what I already know? Most people stop bothering because the friction (new tab, fresh chat) outweighs the benefit. Side Chat removes the friction. Highlight the suspicious sentence in the response, click "Ask in Side Chat", and a separate model gives you a quick read. Use it as a yes/no signal, not a verdict; for sourced verification a fact-check guide goes deeper.
Most spot-checks die because they are too much friction. You doubt a sentence, but opening a new chat to verify means abandoning the thread you are in. So you let it slide. Side Chat removes the trade-off: the verification happens next to the answer, against a different model, and disappears when you are done.
- 1
Install GPT Master to add Side Chat to ChatGPT
Install from the Chrome Web Store. The extension works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera. After installing, refresh ChatGPT and the right panel becomes available on every conversation.
- 2
Highlight the claim you want to verify
Inside any ChatGPT response, drag-select the sentence or paragraph you want to spot-check. A small context menu appears above your selection with an "Ask in Side Chat" option.
- 3
Ask "Is this accurate?" in the side panel
Click "Ask in Side Chat". The selection is attached as context. Type a quick verification question ("Is this accurate?", "Source?", "Any edge cases?") and a separate model answers in the right panel. Your main ChatGPT thread sees none of this.

Frequently asked questions
- Which model answers in Side Chat?
- Side Chat is routed through GPT Master's server to a separate third-party model, so the answer is independent of the ChatGPT model in your main thread. The point of a spot-check is getting a second opinion, and a separate model is what makes that work.
- Does the spot-check count against my ChatGPT message limit?
- No. Side Chat runs on GPT Master's infrastructure, not your ChatGPT account. Your ChatGPT usage is not touched. Free GPT Master accounts get a starter set of side-chat questions per week; the Pro plan removes the cap. See the pricing page for current limits.
- Does the spot-check appear in my ChatGPT history?
- No. Side Chat lives in the right panel of the GPT Master extension. It does not save into ChatGPT's conversation history and does not show up in your ChatGPT sidebar.
- What if the side-chat answer also looks wrong?
- Treat Side Chat as a quick second opinion, not a final source. Two models disagreeing is a useful signal: it tells you the claim is worth checking against a primary source rather than trusting either model.
