ChatGPT navigation

How to navigate long ChatGPT conversations

Updated May 27, 2026

Quick answer

Scrolling up through a long ChatGPT thread to find a specific message wastes time and is error-prone. Starting a new chat throws away the context you built. The GPT Master minimap shows every user prompt and assistant heading as a clickable list in a right panel. Pick the scope (prompts only or all turns), set the heading depth, and click any entry to jump straight to that message. The free tier includes a weekly allowance of minimap jumps; the Pro plan removes the cap. See the pricing page for current limits.

Once a ChatGPT conversation passes a few dozen messages, linear scrolling stops being a navigation strategy. You overshoot, miss the right exchange, and spend more time searching than reading. The GPT Master minimap turns the thread into a vertical outline in the right panel, so the whole structure is visible at a glance and any point is one click away.

  1. 1

Open the minimap in the right panel

Click the GPT Master icon in the right panel of any ChatGPT conversation. The minimap tab opens and immediately lists every user prompt and assistant heading in the thread.

  2. 2

Choose your scope and heading depth

Switch between two scope tabs: prompts only for a quick outline, or all turns to include assistant headings. Then cycle the heading depth through four levels of detail, from H1 alone up through every heading the assistant produced.

  3. 3

    Click any entry to jump

Click an entry in the minimap and the page scrolls to that message. Turn on auto-follow if you want the active entry to highlight as you scroll manually through the thread.

Frequently asked questions

How many jumps does the free tier include?
The free tier includes a weekly allowance of minimap jumps that covers most users. Each click in the minimap that scrolls the page to a message counts as one jump. GPT Master Pro removes the weekly cap. See the pricing page for the current number.
Does the minimap work in ChatGPT Projects and Custom GPTs?
Yes. The minimap renders in any ChatGPT conversation surface: standard chats, Projects, and Custom GPTs. The same scope and depth controls apply everywhere.
What if the assistant reply has no headings?
Switch to prompts-only scope. That view lists every user prompt regardless of whether the assistant used headings, so it works on every thread, structured or not.
Does the minimap slow down the page?
No. The minimap indexes the conversation once on open and updates incrementally as new messages arrive. It stays responsive on threads with several hundred messages.
