How to ask a follow-up without derailing your ChatGPT thread
Updated May 28, 2026
Quick answer
Follow-up questions in ChatGPT change the main conversation's direction. The model picks up your tangent and threads it into later answers. The workaround most people use, opening a new tab, costs the original context. GPT Master adds a side panel where you highlight any part of the response, ask the follow-up there, and get an answer from a separate model. Your main thread stays on its original topic.
Every follow-up question is a small bet: is this worth the cost of shifting the conversation? In long threads where you have spent twenty messages building context, that cost is real. Side Chat removes the bet because the follow-up does not enter the main thread at all.
- 1
Open the conversation you do not want to disturb
Go to chatgpt.com and open the thread you have been working in. With GPT Master installed, the right panel is available the moment the page loads.
- 2
Highlight the part you want to follow up on
Select the specific sentence or section your question is about. The context-menu popover shows "Ask in Side Chat" above the selection. Selecting the relevant part is what tells Side Chat what context to attach.
- 3
Type the follow-up in the side panel
Click "Ask in Side Chat". A question input opens, with the selected text already attached. Type the follow-up and submit. The answer renders in the right panel. The main ChatGPT thread does not move.

Frequently asked questions
- What counts as 'derailing' the main thread?
- Any time a follow-up question reframes what ChatGPT thinks you are working on. Even short tangents can change the model's assumptions, which then leak into later answers. The longer the thread, the more it matters.
- Can I keep asking follow-ups in the side panel?
- Yes. Each side-chat question runs against the selection you attached. If you want to dig deeper, ask again with a different selection or a follow-up to the side-chat answer itself.
- Does Side Chat work in ChatGPT Projects?
- Yes. Side Chat works in any ChatGPT conversation, including conversations inside Projects, as long as the GPT Master extension is loaded on the page.
- What happens to the side-chat questions when I close the conversation?
- Side Chat is scoped to the current page session. Closing or navigating away clears the side panel. There is no separate history view for Side Chat exchanges in the current version.
