How to ask ChatGPT a clarifying question
Updated May 28, 2026
Quick answer
Clarifying questions in ChatGPT get added to the thread, and ChatGPT often rewrites or expands the prior answer to address them. That is fine when you want the answer revised, and a problem when you just want a definition. Side Chat gives you a separate channel: highlight the unclear part, ask for clarification in the panel, the original answer is unchanged.
A clarification is rarely a request to redo the answer. It is usually "what did you mean by X". But asking it in-thread pulls the whole reply back into motion. Side Chat treats the clarification as an aside, which is what it actually is.
- 1
Pick out the part you want clarified
In any ChatGPT response, select the word, phrase, or sentence that needs more detail. The selection becomes the context for your clarifying question.
- 2
Open Side Chat from the context menu
The "Ask in Side Chat" option appears above your selection. Clicking it opens the right panel with the selection pre-attached. No need to copy and paste anything.
- 3
Ask the clarifying question
Type the question ("What does this mean?", "Why this approach?", "What is the difference between A and B?") and submit. The answer comes back in the side panel. ChatGPT in the main thread does not re-explain or rewrite anything.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from just asking in the main chat?
- When you ask in the main chat, ChatGPT treats your clarification as part of the conversation and often rewrites the previous response or shifts the direction. Side Chat keeps the original answer intact and gives you the clarification separately.
- Can I ask follow-up clarifications in the side panel?
- Yes. You can keep asking inside the side panel as long as you need. Each question runs against the selection you attached and the prior exchanges in the current session.
- Will the clarification show up if I share the ChatGPT conversation?
- No. Side Chat answers live in the GPT Master extension and are not part of the ChatGPT conversation that gets shared via ChatGPT's built-in share feature.
- Are there limits on clarifying questions?
- The free tier covers a starter set of side-chat questions per week. The Pro plan removes the cap. See the pricing page for current limits.
