How to ask ChatGPT about a specific part of a response
Updated May 28, 2026
Quick answer
You want to drill into one paragraph of a long ChatGPT answer. The usual options are bad: copy the paragraph into a new chat (losing context), or paste it back into the same thread (which feels redundant). Side Chat fixes this by anchoring your question to the selection. Highlight the exact section, click "Ask in Side Chat", and your question runs with that section attached. The main answer stays as a reference next to the side panel.
Long ChatGPT answers often have one part you want to push on. Without a way to anchor a question to that part, you end up rephrasing the whole context. Side Chat anchors the question to the selection.
- 1
Find the part of the response you want to drill into
Scroll to the specific paragraph, code block, or list item in the response. The longer the original answer, the more useful precise selection becomes.
- 2
Drag-select the section and open Side Chat
Highlight the section. The context menu shows "Ask in Side Chat" above your selection. Click it. The panel opens with that exact text attached as context for your question.
- 3
Ask your question with the section as context
Type the question you want answered about that section. The side-chat answer treats your selection as the focus, so you do not need to restate or re-quote anything. The original response stays untouched in the main thread.

Frequently asked questions
- How big can the selection be?
- A single word up to a long paragraph all work. Very large selections may use more of the model's context window for less benefit; pick the smallest selection that captures what your question is about.
- Does Side Chat see the rest of the conversation, or only my selection?
- Side Chat is anchored on your selection. It does not have the full ChatGPT conversation history as context. That is intentional: the point is a focused answer about the specific part you chose.
- Can I ask follow-ups against the same selection?
- Yes. After the first side-chat answer, you can ask additional questions in the same panel; they all share the original selection as context.
- Does this work on code blocks?
- Yes. Selecting code inside a ChatGPT code block attaches the code as context. You can ask "what does this do?", "is there a bug here?", or "rewrite this in another language" without changing the main thread.
