How to highlight text in a ChatGPT reply

Updated May 27, 2026

Quick answer

ChatGPT has no built-in text highlighting inside a conversation. Selected text is visible while your cursor is on it and nothing more. The usual workaround is to screenshot the passage or paste it into a notes doc, both of which sever the link to the original thread. GPT Master adds passage highlighting through notes: select a span of text in any ChatGPT reply, attach a note to the selection, and GPT Master highlights that text in the conversation on every reload. The highlight is persistent and visible without needing to open the Notes tab first.

A passage worth highlighting is usually one you need to revisit, question, or act on later. Selecting text in a browser is temporary by default. GPT Master makes the selection permanent by storing it as the anchor for a note, so the highlighted passage stays marked across sessions and reloads.

  1. 1

Select the text you want to highlight

Click and drag to select any span of text inside a ChatGPT reply. You can select a phrase, a sentence, or a longer passage. The selection does not need to be a complete sentence.

  2. 2

Attach a note to the selection

Wait for the popover that appears after selecting text, then click the option to add a note. Write your annotation and save it. GPT Master stores the selected text as the passage anchor for that note.

  3. 3

See the highlight persist on reload

Close and reopen the conversation. GPT Master finds the noted passage in the message and highlights it in place. The highlight stays visible until you delete the note.

Frequently asked questions

Does highlighting change the ChatGPT conversation?
No. The highlight is added by the GPT Master extension in your browser. ChatGPT does not see any change, and the highlighted text in the conversation is a visual overlay only.
What happens if the same phrase appears multiple times in a message?
GPT Master highlights the first occurrence of the passage in that specific message. If the phrase appears multiple times, only the first instance is highlighted.
Can I highlight text in user prompts as well as assistant replies?
Yes. You can select text in any part of the conversation, including your own prompts, and attach a note to it.
What happens to the highlight if I delete the note?
Deleting the note removes the highlight. The text remains in the conversation, but the visual marking and the attached annotation are both cleared.
