Claude chat history missing: where to look first
Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
A Claude chat that looks missing is usually one of three things: you are signed in to a different account, it was an incognito chat, or it was deleted. A chat started inside a Project still shows in the full list, but a Shared or Archived filter can hide it. Open claude.ai/recents and search for a word from the message. The search box matches message text, not only titles.
Since Claude merged Cowork and chat, the sidebar section is called Chats and tasks, and parts of the layout changed. If a chat seems gone, one of the checks below usually finds it. This page covers chats on claude.ai, not Claude Code.

- 1
Check the account
Click your name at the bottom left; the menu shows the email. A second Claude account has its own separate chats, so confirm you are in the one you used.
- 2
Search with a word from the chat
Open claude.ai/recents, click the magnifier, and type a word you remember. The box, Search chats and tasks, matches text inside messages as well as titles, so a word from the body works.
- 3
Clear the filters
Click the filter icon on that page. It offers All, Shared, and Archived. Set it to All so no filter hides the chat.
- 4
Look inside Projects
A chat started inside a project still appears in the full list at claude.ai/recents, with no project label on its row. In the sidebar it can sit under its project instead of the main chat list. If you still cannot find it, open Projects and check the project it belonged to.

Check Pinned and your groups in the sidebar
Check the Pinned section at the top of the sidebar. If you used Move to group, the sidebar lists chats under each group name and an Ungrouped section. The page at claude.ai/recents stays one list, so look there if the sidebar is confusing.

Rule out incognito and deleted chats
Incognito chats (the ghost icon) are not saved, so they never appear in history. A chat deleted one by one or in bulk leaves your history at once, and Anthropic removes it from its back end within 30 days.

- Did the Cowork update delete my chats?
- No. The release note says chats, tasks, and projects carry over. They now share one list called Chats and tasks, with Chat and Cowork as a toggle next to the message box.
- Can I get a deleted Claude chat back?
- Claude's help describes no restore. An export you made earlier under Settings > Privacy > Export data may still contain the chat.
- Does Claude have an archive for chats?
- Not for single chats. The Chats and tasks page has an Archived filter, but the web app has no Archive action in the chat menus or the selection toolbar. Projects are different: the project menu has Archive. If your chat was in a project, look for that project at the bottom of the Projects list, where archived projects are listed.
- Why does search show nothing for a chat I remember?
- Try another word from the message, since the search matches text and not meaning. Incognito and deleted chats will never match.
