How to save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF
Updated September 29, 2026
Quick answer
Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) with the destination set to Save as PDF gets a short ChatGPT answer onto paper. The printout follows the screen layout, though, and long threads can come out with early messages missing. For a document built from the full conversation, click the GPT Master Export button beside the message box and pick Save as PDF. Chrome opens its print dialog with every message dated and tables kept readable.
Most people need a PDF of a ChatGPT chat for a practical reason: a client or a teacher wants to see the work, and a link will not do. ChatGPT has no PDF button, so the browser print dialog is the usual fallback. It handles a short answer well. Longer threads are where it struggles.

Print short answers with Ctrl+P
Open the chat, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac), and set the destination to Save as PDF. Check the preview before saving: the layout follows the ChatGPT screen, and on long threads some earlier messages may be missing.

Add GPT Master to Chrome
Install GPT Master from the Chrome Web Store (it also runs in Edge, Brave, and other Chromium browsers) and reload chatgpt.com. An Export button appears beside the ChatGPT message box.
- 3
Choose Save as PDF from Export
Open the conversation, click Export, and pick Save as PDF. If you work from the GPT Master sidebar, right-click the chat there and choose the same option.
- 4
Finish in Chrome's print dialog
Set the destination to Save as PDF and click Save. The PDF carries the chat title, each message with its date and time, and headings, tables, and code blocks laid out for paper.

Frequently asked questions
- Does ChatGPT have a built-in PDF export?
- No. The only built-in export is the full-account one in Settings > Data controls, and it cannot produce a PDF of a single chat.
- Why does the PDF open through Chrome's print dialog?
- The PDF comes from Chrome itself rather than a library bundled into the extension, so Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Cyrillic text render without missing characters.
- Will images from the chat appear in the PDF?
- No. Images are marked with an [image] placeholder and uploaded files are listed by name. The text, tables, code, and links are all kept.
- Do I need a paid plan to save chats as PDF?
- No. All three export formats are included in the free plan.
