How to attach notes to specific ChatGPT passages
Updated May 27, 2026
Quick answer
Most annotation tools attach a note to a document, page, or conversation as a whole. Without one inside ChatGPT, the fallback is to copy the passage into a separate doc with your comment beside it, which leaves the source thread unmarked and the note stranded. GPT Master goes one level deeper: select any span of text in a ChatGPT reply, write a note about that specific passage, and it stays anchored to that text. The passage is highlighted in the conversation on every reload. If the same phrase appears multiple times in the message, only the first occurrence is highlighted. Nothing is written back to ChatGPT.
The difference between a note on a conversation and a note on a specific passage is precision. A passage-level annotation means you know exactly which sentence the context applies to, which matters when a single reply contains several distinct claims worth commenting on separately. GPT Master makes passage-level annotation a two-step action: select and write.
- 1
Select the specific text you want to annotate
Click and drag to highlight any span of text inside a ChatGPT message. The selection can be a phrase, a sentence, or a longer paragraph. Release to see the note popover.
- 2
Write and save the annotation
Type your note in the popover and save it. GPT Master stores the selected text as the anchor and your annotation as the note content. The passage is highlighted immediately in the conversation.
- 3
Jump between passage notes in the Notes tab
Open the Notes tab in the GPT Master right panel. Each passage annotation appears as an entry with a preview of the highlighted text. Click any entry to scroll the conversation to the highlighted passage and read the full note.

Frequently asked questions
- How long can the selected passage be?
- There is no enforced length limit on the selected text. Shorter selections make better anchors since they are easier to locate on reload. A sentence or two is usually the right size.
- What if the ChatGPT reply is regenerated or edited?
- GPT Master searches for the noted text by content on reload. If the message is regenerated and the original phrasing no longer exists, the highlight will not reattach. The note entry stays in the Notes tab, but the passage anchor becomes inactive.
- Can I attach multiple notes to the same passage?
- Each selection creates its own note entry. You can select the same passage twice to attach two separate annotations, but both will anchor to the same text.
- Can I edit a passage note after saving it?
- Yes. Click the note entry in the Notes tab to open the edit view, update the text, and save the changes. The passage anchor is preserved.
