How to move many ChatGPT chats to a folder at once
Updated May 27, 2026
Quick answer
ChatGPT has no folder system at all, so the usual workaround is renaming conversations with prefixes or just scrolling a giant flat list. GPT Master adds real folders. Create named folders in the GPT Master sidebar, then select multiple conversations using hover checkboxes and move them all with one action. The move is reversible, so you can reorganize freely. Free supports everyday filing; Pro removes the cap. See pricing for the current numbers.
Folders are the most useful way to organize ChatGPT history, but they only help if you can actually get your conversations into them. ChatGPT does not have folders at all. GPT Master adds folders and makes it easy to populate them in bulk, so organizing an existing library of chats takes minutes instead of hours.
- 1
Create folders in the GPT Master sidebar
Open chatgpt.com with GPT Master installed. In the sidebar panel, create folders for your main categories (by project, client, topic, or time period). You can create as many as you need. Folders show in the sidebar alongside your conversation list.
- 2
Select the conversations you want to move
Hover any conversation row to reveal its checkbox. Select all the conversations that belong in a given folder. Shift-click selects a range if the chats are adjacent. The Pro plan removes the batch cap so you can select as many as you want at once.
- 3
Choose Move to Folder and pick a destination
With conversations selected, click Move to Folder in the action bar. A folder picker appears showing your existing folders. Select the destination and confirm. All selected chats move immediately. Repeat for each category until your sidebar is organized.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I move conversations between folders after the initial sort?
- Yes. Move to Folder works the same way whether a conversation is in your main list or already in a folder. Select, move, done.
- What happens to conversations inside a folder when I open them?
- They open and behave exactly like any other ChatGPT conversation. The folder is just an organizational layer in the sidebar. The chat itself is unchanged.
- Are folders stored locally or in my ChatGPT account?
- GPT Master folders are stored locally in your browser via the extension. They are not part of your ChatGPT account on OpenAI's servers.
- Can I use bulk move on conversations I have already archived?
- You can unarchive conversations first using a bulk action, then move them to a folder. Or you can move active conversations to folders and archive separately.
